The Ice Ray by Glaiceana The Ice Ray by Glaiceana
*UPDATE* Thanks for all the constructive criticism, I've took it all into account and you can see the updated version right here: sta.sh/019k6xm2dgb6
This idea appeared in my head one day. The Ice Ray is a kind of winter spirit.
This is also the first painting I've done with my new graphics tablet, which is a second hand Intuos 3.
Crits are welcome.

This is something I'd call a masterpiece! It looks so beautiful. The background looks very real. I like the way you did the northern lights, they're like colourful fire. The ray looks amazing with it's details. Ice ray, what a wonderful idea.  And the water and the icebergs are very well done too. Everything looks so perfect! :la:

Wow! Spectacular colours!! The icebergs and the water are so beautifully done, my favourite bit has to be the intricate design on the ray though, very beautiful!

Hi.  I'm here through #ProjectComment.  I saw this in the general feed and it really stuck out.  I like it.  However, I feel it has a couple of issues that hold it back, and I'd like to talk about those because you can make it better.

First off, I could not do this.  It's out of my skill level.  The colours are beautiful, the conceit is fantastic, the individual items are great.  I think the design lets it down.  It looks crowded, with the ray about to crash into the northern lights.  Because the lights pick out some of the ray's colours, it's hard to tell them apart on a level of distance.  The bluer parts of the Aurora come forward.  I think it could do with the whole canvas being doubled in size, the aurora taking up a chunk of the sky but not all of it, and the ray being out to the right so it is travelling left and has plenty of looking room - literally room on the canvas for it to be looking into.  The parallel line of the top of the ray and the bottom of the Aurora is a powerful echo, but I think the sky is acting as a cage there, and not as a support.

In closing, I want to say this really is cool.  In particular I appreciate the fine work on the ray.  It's the central point, it's far more detailed than the rest, and it's good to look at.  Keep up those bits, but please look over design work more thoroughly.  You could take something that is technically very good in details and make it technically very good throughout.

Thank you very much for your comment! It is very helpful. And yes enough people have pointed out the aurora so I'll definitely be fixing it :) I understand what you mean about the canvas size, since I have it all on layers it would be possible for me to copy the sky and stretch it out across a wider canvas, will see how that works :)
Thanks again for the feedback and compliments! :D

the nicely drawn aurora adds much magic to this image
I like the colours there and how You positioned the megrim
its smooth move reminds me the way birds fly in the air :)

but I was thinking about the stingray indeed :)

This piece has a nice magical mood, very eye catching. The ray is beautifully done as well as the ice floes on the water. I think the glow and details of the ray really depict a magic winter spirit.

Regarding the water, the waves should be bigger below and smaller above since at distance things get smaller. As for the aurora, it should be a transparent thing. I also think would be good to learn composition to better place things on the canvas.

Hope this helps.

I really enjoyed this piece for the originality of the concept that you brought to life, and the manner in which you did.  I think the way you made sure to show that the ray is really an ice spirit by depicting thinner translucent layers on his fins really brought him to life!  All in all I feel that this piece is well rendered and beautiful, like many others I don't have much in the way of suggestions for improvements.  One small detail I did notice that felt a little inconsistent is I saw you were careful to show the reflection of the ice floes in the water, but the ray doesn't appear to have any kind of reflection or shadow even though he is still in the process of taking off.  I think that adding this may give an additional dimension of realism and believably to an already beautiful piece.  Well done!

Oh my! First thing I noticed was I love the colors you used here. You pretty much have all my favorite shades of blue and green in one piece!

Second I really like how you have so much going on and better than that it's not too cluttered or overwhelming.

The only thing I can really add to it is kind of what I've seen others say with the aurora, they're very beautiful but the feel a bit strong in comparison. Maybe if they were a little more faded. The strength of the colors in it keeps pulling my eye from the other details.

The glow of the Ray and the details in it are really quite amazing, as well as details throughout the rest of the piece as well.

I can't really offer too much more as I don't know much about digital art and/or drawing, but it's a beautiful image  very lovely work!

It couldn't hurt to try, especially being on another layer ^^;

The mood and level of detail in this image is fantastic. I also really like the movement that you have in the composition with the diagonal lines of the aurora borealis and the creature. I agree that some areas could use a little more attention, like the water and the sky, but I won't dwell on that since it's already been mentioned.

Another area that I think the image could be improved in is the value hierarchy - that is, what different tonal values you have going on in the image and how they're organized. The creature is obviously the primary focal point, but it has lower contrast than some of the less important elements in the image, specifically the moon and the icebergs. It's a pretty dark image because of the black night sky, so you want the subject to have lighter values that make it really stand out in that environment. I know ice is white, but since this is a night scene, I don't think they would appear to be pure white, so you could darken them a bit to allow them to recede in terms of space and importance. Also making the moon a bit softer and smaller might help it blend into the image and be part of the aurora borealis rather being than its own element competing with the creature (here's a photo that you could perhaps use a reference if you choose to move forward with the sky www.tagishwildernesslodge.com/… ). You could also add some lighter tones to the creature to make it pop a bit more and at the same time emphasize the light source. (Btw it can be really helpful to keep a layer on top set to Color or Saturation mode and filled with black. That way you can turn the layer on to check your values and make sure it's moving in the right direction.)

Oh and one more thing I'd like to mention is - don't be afraid to have some elements overlap. It helps to create a sense of space and proportion that we can understand. For example, I'm not exactly sure where the creature is in relation to the ice bergs, how close it is to us, or how large it is. It's probably a bit late to start moving around the icebergs to fix that in this piece, but you might want to keep that in mind in when composing future images.

Good luck, and keep up the good work! :)

Thanks a lot for your feedback! :) I agree about the values, will definitely need to work on those more. And yes I understand what you mean about the positioning of the ice bergs. Thanks again :D

The water, the ice and the ray are very well painted but (to me) the boreal aurora does not meet the quality of the rest of the pic.
(sorry for my english, I hope this sentence makes sense)
I like the originality of this picture and its colors: a multitude of different blue.
The ray and the water & icebergs are just perfectly done: realistic and irrealistic at the same time !
Love it <3

I really like this! You draw the water soooo realistic, and the idea itself is also very creative.  I love the nothern light as well, it really gives it a spiritual feeling.. if you know what I mean. I'm dutch so it's hard to explain, sorry. Also the details like those patterns on their ''wings'' are really nice.  This is truly a wonderful piece, good job!
