Mountain Cave

Description

A cave up high in the side of a cliff. I was trying to give a sense that the mountain you see in the distance is actually part of the one you are standing in. You can see other caves over there as well.

This time I started with colour and not greyscale, and I think it was a lot easier and faster. I think it looks good in thumbnail size, but I think I need something more for when looking at the painting in larger scale.

Feedback would be greatly appreciated :)

*UPDATE* Thanks everyone for all the comments, feedback and critiques, if you would like to see the results of the crits, here's a link to the new version on stash :D [link] Please continue to give feedback and advice however, as it is all very helpful and much appreciated :)

Hi, this is my first critic on deviantart so i hope it gonna be right.
First, good job here on rock texture, well done.
The main problem of your painting i think is the composition.

To enhanced the final result you should think about the "third rule", here you could modify your composition with the ground of the first flour just at the first third from the bottom. and maybe put the right side or the left side of your cavern on the first or third from the left.

For the color, you have a nice color choice for the first ground, but i think the crystal pop out from the reste of the whole picture, maybe try to use complementary color or create a triadic picture using a third colour.
Use this website for exemple :
[link]

Choose triad in the choice and use the red circle to choose a color it will give you 2 other colors wich could work nice with the first one.
And you can export this by clicking export and take this as a color palette or an html version with some gradient from these color.

Try to create a little more details on your second ground.
more you are far more volumes are desaturated and imprecise

Your first ground is really well done for the rock texture and unfortunatly the second ground is just few meters after this one and has been designed with much less detail.

To finish, a lot of people told me that when i was starting digital painting or matte painting, try to make your scene with some life elements, the scene shouldn't be frozen, add some life to it, some elements wich make us feel wind, a character, birds, or some cloud with a different orientation make us think about the atmosphere of this place.

To explain my rates i will make a little resume.

1) Vision : the overall image is good but could be enhanced by modifying some little things.

2) Originality : The inside view from a cavern where we could see the outside as already been done by a lot of people, see 1-2 everyday in few groups of digital painting so maybe add some building outside or some mountains in the background.

3) Technique Really nice first ground but you could really enhanced the whole image detailling the second ground and create more volume for the background (the far ground distance)

4) Impact : The picture work but as i told it in the originality part, already see some environment like this.

So as always, it's here only my opinion, hope it helps and maybe see you soon for an other one.

Good evening,
Rémi
