A cave up high in the side of a cliff. I was trying to give a sense that the mountain you see in the distance is actually part of the one you are standing in. You can see other caves over there as well.
This time I started with colour and not greyscale, and I think it was a lot easier and faster. I think it looks good in thumbnail size, but I think I need something more for when looking at the painting in larger scale.
Feedback would be greatly appreciated
*UPDATE* Thanks everyone for all the comments, feedback and critiques, if you would like to see the results of the crits, here's a link to the new version on stash [link] Please continue to give feedback and advice however, as it is all very helpful and much appreciated
Ok, I don't want to seem like one of those crappy people who give overly flowery critiques, but I have to say, THIS IS BEAUTIFUL.
I'm not sure what inspired this, but it would be interesting to know. Almost reminds me of Up, if you've seen that.
Anyway. I absolutely love the way you shaded the rocks. So much detail was put into each one that this could even be mistaken for a photograph. My only problems with this painting are very simple and opinionated, so bare with me please:
1. What are those black dots on the left side of the mouth of the cave? Bugs? Dust? For me, they are a bit distracting, but maybe that was where you wanted the focal point to be? I'm not sure.
2. The glowing crystals. Beautiful, and very nice touch. The only thing is, their reflection off of the rocks around them looks more like frost then glow. Not sure if that was intentional... But it might be better to make the glow a bit more transparent.
3. Is the cave you were talking about supposed to be the giant crack in the mountain up ahead? It's difficult to tell that it's a cave, although the angle we are looking at it would suggest that it should be no different than you made it. Maybe make it just a tinsy bit darker.
Otherwise, this is just a gorgeous painting. And on an off note, I'd like to mention that I really admire that an artist with your talent is still looking for feedback. I know many great artists let their talent get to their head, and completely ignore the fact that while they are awesome, there is always a way to be better. Props to you~
This is very beautiful! the cave itself is alluring what with the fluorescent crystals and the darkness of the cave. the lighting is spot on and I can definitely get a feel of this being a part of the same mountain. The only thing critical I can say is that the caves in the distance aren't very convincing to me. they just kinda look like dots. Perhaps if there were a ledge or ledges and more nooks and crannies involved I might be more convinced. Still it's a very interesting concept and I love the perspective. The sky is very pretty but I also might suggest adding in a bird or two in the background to better get that profound feel of height and immensity.
I think it looks good, n' you have managed to portray the rest of the mountain well. the crystals are what drew me too it at first when it was in thumbnail view, if you wanted to add something else in to the picture maybe some moss or Ivy growing round the contour's of the cave, other than that looks amazing, really like the shading that you've done.
I'm really impressed by the rocks you did, great texture, shape and colors. The lighting is perfect, it gives a nice depth to the image. Congrats for that.
The crystals are beautiful, but it seems that there's something wrong with the reflected light on the rock. I'm not sure the lights would reflect so bright like that on it. Maybe you could did the lighting bigger, less sharp and more transparent to the right side. It's really hard to explain with words, but it seems like white lines not reflected light. But it's just details, you did a nice job.
